My son came home from University and I suggested going for a walk round the local park to catch up. I also wanted to clean the car which was on my "to do" list. This task that had been reshuffled a few times and he offered help. I suggested we do it tomorrow. He promptly said, Mum, no time like the present, let's get it done now. I saw he an a point so we continued our conversation about his life and mine over buckets of soapy water.
He reminded me that we often spend more time putting things off, rearranging disagreeable or unlikeable tasks till another better time, when in most cases, the "best" time: is the moment right in front of us. He is right. Also waiting for inspiration and motivation to appear and "when we feel like it" is equally faulty logic. This is a sporadic, unreliable strategy. I much prefer the count down to ten and then do it anyway.
Timing is the other aspect of time. When is the right time to do things. Daniel Pink's fascinating recent book entitled When. One of the things that really came across in this read, is that good beginnings and good endings in most cases help us through the muddle in the middle and that in every hour, if we decimate 52 minutes to quality, focused activity, we can refresh with 17 minutes of switching focus to something else. Well worth a read.
